Mac Mini M4 SSD DFU restore: step by step

A new storage module is blank. Nothing on it can boot, so the Mac Mini has to be restored the way Apple restores a Mac that will not start: in DFU mode, from a second Mac running macOS 14 or later. Follow Apple's current Finder-based DFU restore instructions to set up the new module. Plan for 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the download.

What you need

  • A second Mac running macOS 14 or later, connected to power and the internet, with enough free space for the restore download (Apple suggests 32GB). Open Finder; no extra app is needed for Apple's current procedure.
  • A USB-C to USB-C cable supporting both data and charging. Apple specifically says not to use a Thunderbolt 3 cable (support.apple.com/108900, checked September 2026).
  • The Mac Mini with the new module fitted and closed, plugged into power. A display is optional and stays black during the restore.
  • Your Time Machine backup, for afterwards.

The steps

  1. Open Finder on the second Mac. Keep Apple's restore instructions open for the current sequence and troubleshooting.
  2. Plug the cable into the second Mac and the leftmost rear USB-C port of the 2024 Mac Mini (when facing the back): Apple's DFU-port chart. See Apple's general revive or restore article for the remaining steps.
  3. Unplug the Mac Mini's power cord and wait ten seconds.
  4. Press and hold the Mac Mini's power button, plug the power cord back in while still holding, and keep holding for up to ten seconds until the DFU window appears in Finder on the other Mac. The Mac Mini's own screen stays black; that is normal.
  5. In Finder, choose Restore Mac and confirm Restore and Update, not Revive Mac. Revive preserves the current installation; a new blank module needs a restore.
  6. Wait. The second Mac downloads the required software and restores the Mini. Do not unplug either machine. The Mac Mini restarts on its own when it is done and the setup assistant appears on its display.
  7. Walk through the setup assistant and, when asked, migrate from your Time Machine backup.

When the Mac Mini does not show up

  • Check the port against Apple's linked diagram for your exact model; only the designated DFU port works. Try a different data-capable cable if the Mac still does not appear.
  • Redo the power-button sequence. Timing matters, so unplug power for ten seconds first.
  • Plug the cable straight into the second Mac, not through a hub or dock.
  • If Finder shows the Mini but the restore stops with an error, note the code, check Apple's troubleshooting, then email [email protected] if you still need help.
  • Nothing works at all: open the Mac Mini and check that the module sits fully in its connector and the screw is in. A module that is not seated behaves exactly like no module.

Watch it done

The iFixit video on the Mac Mini M4 SSD upgrade shows the hardware swap and DFU restore. It may use Apple Configurator rather than the current Finder interface; follow the steps above for the restore.

Can I do the restore from a Windows PC or an iPad?
No. Apple's current Finder-based procedure requires another Mac running macOS 14 or later. Borrow one with enough free space and allow time for the download. If that is not possible, email [email protected] and ask about our pre-installation service.
Does the restore need my Apple Account?
The restore itself does not. The setup assistant afterwards asks for it, as on any new Mac. If Find My was on before the swap, Activation Lock applies, so use the same account.
Which macOS version does it install?
The newest version Apple offers for the Mac Mini M4 at that moment. You cannot pick an older one in this process.
Do I have to do this again later?
No. The DFU restore happens once, when the module is new. macOS updates afterwards install the normal way.
